A Day Trip to the Sierra Nevada

Well, here we are, in Spain for three winter months.  Quite a change from our normal Ontario winter – and so far, so good.  Our rented accommodation is quite fine.  Two bed, two bath, not too big, full kitchen, and walking distance to pretty much all we need (groceries, restaurants, beach (though it is a bit too cold for that).  Our plan is to rent a car from time to time and see what we can in the general area of southern Spain.

One recent adventure was a driving day trip to the Sierra Nevada mountains.  The driving route we chose was twisty and beautiful.  We set up the GPS to take a secondary type of route so that we would get away from highways, and that seemed to work out pretty well.

Our ultimate destination was lunch in a town called Trevelez which is known, apparently, for its air cured ham so - of course - we went to a restaurant called:
“House of Ham” (in Spanish of course)
and had a plate of ham, and one of green beans with almonds.  Maybe an odd combination but it was pretty good.  Oddly the almonds were ground, which gave the whole dish a different spin.

The restaurant TV was showing coverage from the day prior which was the Trump inauguration.  Had a wonderful window table for looking out over the mountains – but for some strange reason the window also had the clothes line in front of it!  Luckily it was not laundry day.

On route to Trevelez we stopped briefly at Fuente Agria which is a spring that gives forth naturally carbonated water.  It is just pouring out of the ground with a few pipes and we scooped some up in our hands and tried it.  High iron content, which you could taste, but there is definite carbonation.  Quite neat.

Anyway – the vistas in the Sierra Nevada mountains are wonderful, and the trip was well worth it.  There was even snow on the mountain tops.

Cheers!
